What are the duties of a school support worker?

A school support worker accompanies your child through their everyday school life. They receive as much support as is necessary, but as little as possible. The support worker is always there when things get difficult. This might mean, for example:

  • Helping them to concentrate and stay organised in lessons
  • Support during break times when social situations become overwhelming
  • Help with transitions – between subjects, classrooms and tasks
  • Support with mobility or in everyday life, where necessary

The teacher remains responsible for the lesson. The school support worker ensures that your child can take part.

What does supporting someone with diabetes involve?

Children with diabetes should be able to take part in everyday school life just as naturally as all other children. Our trained support staff assist with, amongst other things:

  • with blood sugar management
  • with insulin management
  • with sport and exercise
  • on school trips and excursions
  • in liaising with teachers and support staff

Frequently Asked Questions

A school support worker supports your child through their day-to-day school life. For example, they help with finding their way around, communication, organisation, social situations and practical everyday tasks. They also enable or facilitate participation in school trips or projects. In our work as school support workers, we place great importance on fostering the child’s independence. Our guiding principle at myschoolcare is: ‘As much as necessary, but as little as possible!’

Yes. If this is included in the approved scope of services, the support worker can also assist your child on school trips or excursions.

School support can be provided in all types of school, for example primary schools, mainstream secondary schools or special schools. The key factors are the individual’s support needs, approval from the funding body and the circumstances at the school. This applies to both mainstream and special schools.

Children and young people with physical, intellectual or mental disabilities, as well as those with certain chronic conditions, may be entitled to a school support worker. The relevant funding body decides whether the eligibility criteria are met.

How quickly school support can begin depends on various factors:

  • the relevant funding body,
  • your child’s individual support needs,
  • the availability of a suitable support worker.

Do you need support at short notice? Please get in touch with us straight away. We’ll do everything we can to find a suitable support worker for your child as soon as possible.

The costs are usually covered by the relevant social services or youth welfare agency as part of integration support, provided the eligibility criteria are met. For you as a family, school support is usually free of charge.

No. That’s exactly why we’re here to help. At myschoolcare, we’ll support you in finding a suitable support worker for your child. Our consultation begins with a face-to-face meeting. We set aside time for an initial personal discussion and to answer your questions. This allows us to learn more about your child’s strengths, interests and needs. We discuss their individual support requirements and your wishes, and look for a school support worker who is the best fit for your child.

A relationship based on trust is particularly important for successful support. At myschoolcare, we ensure that the person is a good fit for your child – both professionally and personally – and meets their support needs. Before the support begins, we coordinate the initial meeting and the next steps together with you and the school.

Depending on the federal state and your individual circumstances, applications are submitted to different authorities. We won’t leave you to sort it out on your own. We’ll be happy to guide you through all the necessary steps.

As early as possible before the start of the school or nursery year. It may also be worth applying during the current school year.

Please feel free to get in touch with us. During an initial consultation, we’ll go through your questions together and give you some guidance on how to proceed.

Yes. Specially trained support staff help children with diabetes with, amongst other things, blood sugar management, using insulin and coping with everyday life at school and nursery.

Depending on the level of support required, we deploy qualified teaching staff or suitable support staff. All staff members receive thorough induction, regular training and professional support from us.

Yes. In fact, that is one of our key objectives. Our support helps your child wherever help is needed, whilst at the same time encouraging their independence and social participation. Our guiding principle at myschoolcare is: ‘As much as necessary, but as little as possible!’

The schedule is determined on an individual basis and approved by the funding body. It may, for example, cover only certain lesson times or the entire school or after-school care day. This depends on your child’s assessed support needs. Whether, and to what extent, the support also covers the full school day, the after-school care programme (OGS) or the after-school club is decided by the funding body on a case-by-case basis.

The duration depends on the individual’s support needs and the funding body’s specific approval period.

We do our utmost to keep downtime to a minimum and to work with you to find a suitable solution.

In a 1:1 support arrangement, a support worker is assigned to a specific child. In a pool model, one or more support workers assist several children within a class as required. Which arrangement is chosen depends on the child’s individual needs, the school’s approach and the funding body’s approval.

Should the situation change or should another solution be required, we will work with you to find a suitable alternative.
